If your kids are too young to read, they can still help you label boxes, containers etc.

Have them help you by drawing a picture of the container’s contents and affixing it to the outside of the container.  You can also label the container so they develop reading skills and it can be identified by adults and other caregivers.

Parents are always complaining about game pieces going missing and then being found again, only to have the puzzle/game they go to be unidentifiable.

Stop this cycle by marking the back of all incoming game pieces and puzzle pieces with a mark on the back of all of the pieces.  then keep a master key for yourself.

For example, all truck puzzle pieces have a blue dot on the back, all alphabet puzzle pieces have a red triangle on the back.

Book Review- Julie Morgenstern’s Time Management From the Inside Out September 26, 2009

When I first read the back cover of Julie Morgenstern’s book, Time Management from the Inside Out, I will admit I was skeptical.  Being a professional organizer, I believe I handle my time fairly effectively.  However as I read on, I realized that everyone, at all levels of organization, could benefit from this book.

This book helps you tackle both the physical and mental clutter that you encounter everyday.   Thus allowing you to perform efficiently and effectively at work, at home, and as a member of a family.  Although the book’s size may be daunting at first, it reads quickly and makes you feel as if Julie herself is in the room coaching you with time management.

For anyone looking to improve their time management skills, even if you think you’re an expert already, this book is a worthwhile investment of time and money!

Julie’s books are available on Amazon and on her website— http://www.juliemorgenstern.com

Do you have trouble getting your child to complete reading assignments?

Take the amount of reading they must complete and divide it equally over the number of days they have to complete it.  Use dated bookmarks to let you child know where they should be reading to each day.

This is an idea I got from my good friend Lea Schneider at http://www.organizerightnow.com/.

Kids have a way of accumulating tiny items and not having any place to put them.  Use some otherwise unused space on the back of a door by using a over door shoe rack like the one seen here:

Use it for accessories, small toys, art supplies, etc.

Have your kids assist you with the endless task of folding clothes!  Use a clothes folder like the ones here:

http://www.flipfold.com/

This will ensure all items are uniform in size and shape.  These folders come in various colors and adult and kids sizing.  For an extra treat, create a timed game with your kids and let them decorate their own folder with stickers and markers.

To give your kids more room for clothes and or toys, install a second closet rod or low lying shelf in their closet.  At a young age, their hanging clothes aren’t that long and by using just one rod, you can be wasting valuable space.

Make sure to keep dress clothes out of reach, and put their school clothes where they can be accessed for morning routines.

Portable Homework September 17, 2009

Often kids don’t have a space in their rooms to complete homework.  Or, they are too young to do homework unsupervised.  However, its difficult to have a spot in your home dedicated to homework.  The solution to this is to create a portable homework unit that your child can store in their room and move to a spot where you can monitor their process.

Use a tote like this one to store supplies when they are not used.

Cowboys and Legos? September 15, 2009

Kids don’t think the way adults do.  Adults often separate toys by the sets they were purchased in.  However, it may be very logical to a child to group cowboy figures with Legos.  If this is how your kids play with these toys, group them together.  It will stop anguish down the road on trying to separate these groupings and will help your child be able to put away their toys without assistance.
