Make a note of it August 27, 2009

Use a small, magnetic dry erase board inside the locker to make notes of things to bring home during the day, like their lunch bag, or uniform to be washed.

Keep it clean August 25, 2009

Have your child clean out their locker at least once a month.  Even the most conscientious student will have papers fall out of books and get jammed at the bottom of the locker.  If they can do it more often, that’s even better!

Use small mesh bins like these:

to store extra items your child needs throughout the day.  Focus on making their locker a comfortable place for them with all their necessities, like you would a desk at the office.

Product Review- Simply Spray Fabric Spray Paint August 22, 2009

A high school friend of mine brought my attention to Simply Spray.  At first I thought it was yet another kid’s craft project that would create clutter and useless hand made items.  A “No No” for a professional organizer!
However, when I received my samples of Simply Spray I instantly become intrigued by the sophisticated colors and possibilities.  I started my crafting with plain white tees from the men’s section of a super store ($2 each).  I twisted, folded, and used elastic bands on the shirts, then sprayed them to create instant tie dye.  They were dry to the touch in about an hour.  I followed the directions and waited 72 hours before washing.  Even after they are washed, the colors are just as bright as when they were first applied.
My little cousins, ages 11 and 14 also got in on the action.  They loved how quickly they could simply start spraying, and the unique patterns they could create.  The 14 year old loved painting a hot pink peace sign on the back of her denim jacket!
I was also impressed with the fact that the spray didn’t get everywhere.  I did my painting on the lawn and the amount left around where I was working was very small.  I wasn’t dripping with paint, and the can didn’t clog.
I also received stencils from Simply Spray and they helped me create some very professional looking tops to wear to client’s houses.  I chose colors that would pop on the tank tops I was painting.  Although the stencil took a little bit to get used to, once I did, it was like an assembly line!  I let everything dry the recommended 72 hours, and now I have a lot of customized business apparel for very little money at all!  I can’t wait to try painting tote bags and more!

You can find Simply Spray at your local craft store and on their website http://www.simplyspray.com

How do I use this thing? August 20, 2009

If your child is new to having a locker just opening the lock may make them nervous.  Have them practice with a combination lock at home to get comfortable so they can easily access their stuff in between classes without anxiety.

What to do with gym clothes? August 18, 2009

If your child had a sport and gym, chances are there are lots of clothes and shoes being carried back and forth to school.  To make it easy on everyone, have your child use a separate bag for gym/sports clothes.  This way they are less likely to get jammed into the bottom of their book bag and they are less likely to create an odor problem.

If you child is new to lockers and nervous about using one, visit the locker with your child at the beginning of the school year (or during the summer months).  In this trip discuss its proximity to their classes, the way they would like to set the locker up and what tools/supplies you want to purchase.  If you can, take measurements!  This will help you purchase some of the organizing supplies we will discuss this month.

Even the most organized student can lose a pen, or need paper during the day.

Purchase your child a few extra supplies like a notebook, pencils, etc. so they can return to their locker during the day and replenish should they need to.  This will alleviate the stress of having to borrow from others.
